Top Toys for 5 Year Old Boys

spiderman toys and cars for 5 year old boys
Action Stations! Top toys for 5 year old boys are all about action. Whether it's police action, adventure action, super hero action or DIY action - yep, you heard me right.

Whatever your 5 year old boy wants to be in life, there are plenty of toys to get him off to a flying start. Did I also forget to mention planes? Well, you'll find all of these and more in my roundup of some of the top toys for the boys.

Does Your 5-Year-Old Boy Love Toy Cars?

#1. LEGO - always voted one of the world's top toys

LEGO is consistently voted one of the top toys in the world. In fact, you could say the Universe - as long as it's the Marvel Universe that is. Yes, LEGO has a range of sets based around many boys' favorite superheroes, and here is LEGO Spiderman.

Like all LEGO sets, the good thing about this set is that it's great for developing the creative abilities and manual dexterity of young boys. It's easy enough for a 5-year-old to put together, with or without the help of parents or siblings, and they'll be pleased with the result. Once finished, Spider Car can be played with just like a regular toy car.

LEGO Spider Car comes with a Spiderman mini-figure and web, and a Venom mini-figure with black whips. Chunky tires, flames, wings - this car's got it all.

Easy-to-follow instructions make this the ideal gift for any 5-year-old boy who just loves his Spiderman. The LEGO Superheroes series includes sets featuring Batman, Superman and The Hulk.

#2. Let your 5-year-old tear up the Neo Tracks!

Neo Tracks is another great toy for a great price - and that's partly what it's all about. How much mileage (pardon the pun) is your 5-year-old going to get out of their new toys? In my opinion, with this one you won't need to worry. The other thing I like about this set is that the tracks themselves are very colorful - in fact some of them are neon, hence the name of the game.

Neo Tracks actually appeals to quite a wide range of ages. I've pitched it at 5-year-olds because I'd say it was about 5, plus or minus 2. From checking out lots of reviews of Neo Tracks from all over the Internet, one thing always stands out - this set is an instant hit straight from the box.

When I say tear up the tracks, I literally mean it, as the track pieces can easily and quickly be put together and then taken apart for storage.

There are hundreds of different combinations of finished track, so kids will never get bored of watching their cars go around. Additional cars and track expansion sets are also available to purchase separately. Again, I can't stress how much fun this is for the money.

#3. Morphibians let boys take the off-road driver's seat

Morphibians is a play-on-words and, you guessed it, is suggestive of what these little radio-controlled cars are all about. The 'morph' part I don't quite get, as the cars can't be made to change shape or appearance. There are, however, a range of them to choose from (or collect) and the one shown below is called Gator. The 'phibians' part I fully get, as these things are perfectly at home being driven across pavement, grass, dirt, sand and even water. The neat little video below shows these RC cars in action (sorry, the video may not be available on mobile devices - it's a Google thing).

The controller handsets are nice as well. Each one is easy for little hands to hold and they come in colors that match the cars. If you're a parent who's into their RC models, I think this would be a good first RC car to get your 5-year-old interested as well.

One final note and reminder is that because these RC cars can operate in water, they need to be drained and towel dried before being put away. This shouldn't take too long and is easily something that boys can remember to do. Also, the manufacturer recommends avoiding using the Morphibians in salt water.

Kid Galaxy Morphibians RC cars are very popular and there are different types to choose from. If you follow the above link to Amazon, you can check out Shark, Killer Whale, Rover, Dirt Frog, Cobra and Explorer, in addition to Gator shown here.

These rugged and fun RC cars really drive well on land and water. At the time of writing they're also less than $20, so represent a top toy for any 5-year-old boy in my opinion.

Top Flying Toys for 5 Year Old Boys

#4. What 5-year-old boys don't like rockets?

If you read my little biography in the 'About' section of this site, then you'll know that I'm a scientist at heart - and there's no other science that captures the imagination of boys like rocket-science. The Geospace Jump Rocket is one of those toys that have become very popular over the past few years, as they allow kids to launch rockets over quite a distance without the need for any pyrotechnics. In fact, all of these types of rockets are generally powered by nothing more than compressed air or water.

In the case of jump rockets and similar models, the compressed air is provided by the kids as they launch themselves onto an air pump to provide a rapid pushing force onto the rocket, propelling it into the air. The rockets are usually made of foam so they are nice and light, travel a good distance and then hit the ground with a soft landing.

Jump rockets are one of the mainstays of top toys for 5 year old boys. In fact, I'd say they're good for ages 5 to 50. Like other variations of jump rocket, the Original Geospace Jump Rocket shown here, has the added bonus that your boys will be getting a little excercise each time they jump - and they won't even realize it.

This version also features a patented Thrust Booster for increased rocket propulsion. Wow!

#5. What 5-year-old boys don't like planes?

If your 5 year old boy loves Disney's Planes, then he'll love the fact that he can recreate the action with one of the foam flyers based on the winged characters from the movie. As boys know, Dusty Crophopper (shown below) is a small-town plane who dreams of competing in a famous high-flying air race. However, he has one big problem - he's afraid of heights! Just like in the movie, get your boy to help Dusty make his dreams come true.

Disney Planes Runway Flyers are made of foam, so they're suitable for playing with both indoors or outdoors. They come with a launcher, but will fly equally well if thrown. Like some of the other toys featured on this page, they don't require any batteries and are simple to operate - and that's the key to any gift for any boy that's appreciated and played with a lot - simplicity.

There's a range of Disney Planes to choose from, or collect, including Dusty Crophopper (shown here), Bravo, Ripslinger and Bulldog.

Each plane comes with its own snap-in runway launcher in colors that match the planes. Pull the trigger and watch as the planes fly for up to 25 feet.

#6. What 5-year-old boys don't like chicken?

Erm... hold on a minute! Chicken? Yep, or to be more precise Flickin' Chicken. As games go, it's guaranteed to cause mayhem and be an absolute hoot, or should I say cluck? Anyway, the aim of the game is a bit like golf. Players position (or throw) a target disc at a distance from where the flickin' action starts. Then, in turn, each player flicks their chicken towards the disc. Where the chicken lands is where the player flicks it again, until they hit the disc.

Added difficulty arises from the fact that the chickens are made of rubber, so they can bounce and roll all over the place. The number of flicks each player takes to hit the disc is their score for that round, which is then totalled over a nine-round match. The player with the lowest score wins.

If you can imagine the situation where mini golf meets rubber chickens, then you have the perfect mash-up that's Flickin' Chicken. In fact, this game is crazy enough that you can make up your own rules.

If you're taking your 5-year-old on a camping trip, picnic or to the beach this year, this game would be great for getting them involved with all the family.

Adventure Toys for 5 Year Old Boys

Ah, yes. Many parents dream of getting their 5-year-old boys away from the television or games consoles and out into the fresh air for some fun and adventure. So, for my final selection of top toys for 5-year-old boys, here's a few ideas for things they might need while they're out discovering the wonders of nature.

#7. A top tool for adventurous boys

If boys are out exploring then they're gonna need tools, right? Uncle Milton - world famous for manufacturing educational and fun toys have teamed up with National Geographic to produce a range of toys for adventurous purposes. In fact, they're more than toys - they're actually gadgets and tools that are just what boys need for any journey of discovery.

One example is the Starry Night Lantern, which is a camping-style lantern that doubles as a planetarium projector. But, the one I'm focusing on here is the Sierra Eco Explorer Multi-Use Tool. You can see what it's all about in the video (sorry, the video may not be available on mobile devices - it's a Google thing).

This useful kit for adventurous boys features two sizes of specimen jars, viewing-light that converts to a headlamp, soil sampler, scooper/tweezer tool and a magnifying glass. Also included is an Activity Field Guide for some great tips and ideas for things to find and do.

There's a clip as well to attach the kit to a belt or an explorer's cargo vest. Thinking of cargo vests...

#8. Adventure-wear for 5 year old boys

Whether it's sons, grandsons, nephews, cousins or friends, they're all going to want a cargo vest when they're out exploring. Again, it's the simple things that make for top gift ideas for boys of any age. In this case, just the addition of a cool piece of adventure-wear can transform the imagination of young minds and get them interested in a whole world of things to discover, learn and be inspired by.

Here are a few suggestions for presenting this cargo vest to your 5-year-old boy - I'm sure you can think of many more:
  • As part of a Halloween costume
  • When you embark on that camping trip
  • At a visit to a natural history musem
  • At a family picnic
  • On a nature trail

I think this little chap looks quite the explorer in his Backyard Safari cargo vest. In fact, this particular make of cargo vest is probably the most fully-featured I've ever seen. It has six D-clips and two shoulder epaulets, large zipper pocket, clear-view pocket, velcro pockets and mesh pockets. It's pretty much got all the storage space your boy will need for carrying all his explorer's essentials.

On the back of the vest is an adjustable strap for fitting and comfort, and it's made of durable material suitable for all outdoor conditions. This is one of those gift ideas that boys just love - I've even heard of them wearing these things to school!

#9. Help your 5 year old boy bring nature to the backyard

Instead of going exploring to find wildlife in your own neighborhood, why not bring some of that wildlife to your own backyard? I think this is an absolute winner of a gift idea for any 5-year-old boy who's into the outdoors. It's a project that family members can share in putting together and has everything you need for your 5-year-old to be able to say "look what I did".

Placed in an appropriate spot during spring, there could be birds moving in within days. Being a bit of a techie, I'd personally drill a tiny hole in the back and fit a camera, which I'd then connect to the home pc to produce nature documentaries of my own. I say I'd like to do this because, as a dad, why should I let the kids have all the fun? Like with many of the toys and gifts I present on this site, if you can think a little bit out of the box like this, then they can make for projects that are way more interesting and that cover a broader age-range. But, always remember to use each product within the manufacturer's specifications and adhere to all of the safety notices that apply.

cool gifts for 5 year old boyToysmith Build and Paint Birdhouse

If there's a cub scout project that requires the construction of a birdhouse, this could be it. The kit includes all the wooden pieces, nails, glue, four paint pots, brush and full instructions.

You're not just building a birdhouse when you put this together - you're building memories.
