VTech Kidizoom Smart Watch vs LeapFrog LeapBand:
Which is the best wearable tech for kids?
VTech Kidizoom Smart Watch vs LeapFrog LeapBand is a big question for parents of tech-savvy boys and girls aged 4 to 9. So, if you're looking for some of the best advice on these great smart watches, then I'm here to help.
On this page, I'll give you the lowdown on both of these devices, and show you the specifications and capabilities of the Kidizoom Smartwatch and the LeapBand.
I'll also be taking a look at some of the accessories which are currently available for both watches and describe how easy these smart watches are to use and to maintain in tip-top condition.
Finally, I'll be giving you my own opinion on the Kidizoom Smartwatch and LeapFrog LeapBand and telling you which is the best wearable tech for kids.
VTech Kidizoom Smart Watch
The Kidizoom watch is smart by name and smart by nature
"We only spent a few minutes with the Kidizoom Smart Watch, and we were impressed with its crisp and vibrant graphics. It was extremely intuitive to use."
(mashable.com)
The Kidizoom Smart Watch, launched in July 2014, is a natural follow-up to VTech's hugely successful InnoTab kids' tablets. I say a natural follow-up, because VTech are clearly keeping their eyes on what's happening in the world of technology for grown-ups, and are matching it with equivalent educational devices for little-ones.
The VTech Kidizoom is certainly more than just a watch. As well as being designed to help kids learn to tell the time and use all of the functionality of a watch, such as a stopwatch, timer and alarm - the VTech Smart Watch is also so much more. Including the ability to take photos and video, record sound, and with pre-installed games apps, the Kidizoom Smart Watch is currently the most fully-featured wearable tech for kids.
Here are some of the technical specifications of the Vtech Smart Watch:
- Vibrant 1.41" color screen with touch and swipe actions
- 640 x 480 photo resolution, and up to 320 x 240 video resolution
- 128 MB built-in memory
- Connectivity to a PC/Mac with included micro USB cable for charging and file transfer

My Verdict on the Kidizoom Smart Watch
The good, the bad, the meh!
I think VTech have really knocked it out the ball park with this great new tech offering for kids. If there are any upgrades in future years, I'd just love to see what improvements and additional features they pack in. Anyway, enough praise for now - let's try to be a little more objective.
So, first up, I really like the concept. But, having played around with the one I bought for my nephew (before I gave it to him, I hasten to add), I'm not entirely convinced that VTech aren't trying to do too much with the one device. Yeah, I like the variety of watch faces it can display and the the fact that it can take photos, record video and sound, but then there are the games as well, and more for you to download. At best, the games can be simple, engaging and make use of the smart-watch's features. At worst, the games can be simple, too easy to master and then boring. The manufacturer's recommended age for the Kidizoom Smart Watch is 3 to 9 years, but I find it difficult to see how it will keep kids hooked over such a broad range.
In my opinion, the Kidizoom is a little too big to wear as a regular watch. But, as we all know, it's more than just a watch, so I'm okay with this. Responsivity of the touch screen is good, I like the shape and the simple look, and the strap. This is made out of some kind of foam, which feels very durable and yet soft. The smart watch is also splash and sweat proof, but not suitable for showering, bathing or swimming. Keep the screen clean with a soft, dry cloth and a little breath, and it should carry on looking great on any kids' wrist.
Finally, the VTech Kidizoom Smart Watch is probably the coolest gadget for kids I've seen in a long time. I say probably, because it's up against its main rival - the LeapFrog LeapBand.
LeapFrog LeapBand
The LeapBand will literally have them playing LeapFrog
"The LeapBand encourages active play and healthy habits with 50 different games and other challenges... it connects to a website or app that lets parents monitor their children's activities and choose which challenges they can select, and which they can't."
(cnn.com)
The LeapBand leapt onto the scene at the same time as the Kidizoom Smart Watch, bringing us another one of the educational tech head-to-head battles we've seen between VTech and LeapFrog over the past few years. However, the premise behind the LeapBand is somewhat simpler than that of the Kidizoom - it's less about entertainment and gadgetry, and more about activity.
The LeapFrog LeapBand is an activity tracker. Much like its cousins designed for grown-ups, in the form of either wearable wrist bands or smartphone apps, the LeapBand suggests activities and actions, tracks progress and provides rewards - but it does all this with kids aged 4 to 7 in mind.
Here's a glimpse under the hood of the LeapFrog LeapBand:
- 1.44" high-resolution color LCD screen and navigation buttons
- Built-in accelerometer
- Rechargeable Li-ion polymer battery
- Connectivity to a PC/Mac with included micro USB cable

Cool colors to match some cool moves!
LeapFrog LeapBand - Green
"Research shows that active play and physical movements are critical to children's health. LeapBand is designed to facilitate physical activities in a fun, imaginative, and engaging way."
LeapFrog LeapBand - Pink
"With virtual pets and an accompanying app that offers age-appropriate lessons about health and nutrition, LeapBand can be a great tool to support a child's healthy development."
My Verdict on the LeapFrog LeapBand
Do you agree with what I think about the LeapBand?
LeapFrog are no strangers when it comes to producing some excellent educational toys and gadgets for boys and girls of all ages. With the LeapBand, they've done it again. I think the concept is refreshing, and a neat twist on previous games apps that have involved the care of, and interaction with, virtual pets. But, are there any down sides?
Well, yes, I think there are a couple. Firstly, the device itself isn't as fully-featured as a watch when compared to the VTech Kidizoom. There's an analog display and a stopwatch function, but no digital display, timer or alarm. Secondly, I don't think it looks as good as the Kidizoom. The strap doesn't look or feel quite as comfortable (although it is a good strap and adjusts for a snug fit), but with the screen and the case it all tends to look a little, well... plastic.
I like the use of buttons for navigation, rather than relying on a touch screen - especially considering the size of the screen. I like the singular purpose of the LeapBand. It's an activity tracker, with those activities based around fun games and getting kids fit and healthy. As an activity tracker, and through those games, it actually achieves a lot. In common with other LeapFrog products, there's also a good amount of parental interaction and control, so that parents can check their child's progress against activities and also set gameplay to be available only at appropriate times.
The LeapFrog LeapBand is a different animal to the VTech Kidizoom Smart Watch, so making a direct comparison isn't really possible. It's for this reason that I'm gonna have to admit defeat and confess that I can't actually make a judgement as to which is the best of the two. They're both the best - just at different things.
Hi there,
ReplyDeleteThanks for giving us your thoughts on these great kids' smart watches. Personally, I'd be a little cautious about submerging either the Kidizoom or the LeapBand - but you make a good point.
I'm glad you found the information useful, and thanks again for visiting.
Steve
Thanks for the comparison!! My kids want a kidizoom, but I'm liking the features and health related fun on the leapband (not to mention we own leappads!). I guess we'll have to look in the store before adding any to their Christmas lists.
ReplyDeleteHi Kiersten,
DeleteYes, the health-related fun is definitely one of the selling points of the LeapBand, and one that I'm sure many parents are going to appreciate.
Thanks for visiting,
Steve
Any comments on battery life of the two devices?
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteYes, battery life is always something that both kids and their parents are keen to know.
In both cases, you're looking at around 3 days of moderate usage on a full charge. When I tested them, they actually only lasted for a day before I needed to charge them again. You'll probably find this when you first get either of these devices - when kids are exploring what they can do with them and trying everything out, then the battery will run down. Once they then start to focus on specific apps/games, actual hands on usage will be less, with a corresponding increase in time between charges.
Both these devices will charge fully in about 3-4 hours, so can be hooked up overnight to be ready in the morning.
Hope this helps and thanks for visiting,
Steve
Thanks Steve, you helped me make the right choice. Went with the vtech mainly because my kid likes to take pics and video.
ReplyDeleteAre there a lot of games for the Vtech watch
ReplyDeleteHi Anthony,
DeleteWell, there are around 30 apps and games available for the Vtech Smart Watch. This includes new clock face themes, camera effects and games, in addition to the ones pre-installed onto the device.
The games, as you'd expect, are a mix of educational - such as 'Master Class Math' and 'World Time', and those aimed at just having fun - such as 'Crazy Catcher', 'Super Snowboard' and 'Where's the UFO'? Some of the camera effects I've seen on the watch are pretty cool as well for this type of device.
What's more, all of these apps and games are free. You'll need to log onto the Vtech Learning Lodge website first before downloading them.
I hope this helps, and thanks for visiting.
Steve
Was there a function on the VTECH watch to set to like clock only mode, where my child could wear it at school without getting in trouble?
ReplyDeleteHi Addie,
DeleteYes there is. In fact both the Vtech Kidizoom and the LeapFrog LeapBand can be set to display just the time and be used like a regular watch. But, all the games and apps are there for when kids are ready to play them.
Thanks for visiting,
Steve
Hi, I have just bought a VTech Kidizoom Smart Watch today in Berlin. I have tried it and everything was fine, beside the recorded voice. There is a constant beeping sound during video and voice recording.. Does anybody observed it, or my product is faulty?
ReplyDeleteHi Caiman,
DeleteI'm always happy when visitors post their experiences on this site, so I must first thank you for letting me know about this particular issue. Unfortunately, it's not something I've experienced myself, and as I'm not associated with VTech (or LeapFrog) I can't offer any advice in terms of customer support.
However, I do get a large number of visitors to this page, so will appeal to anyone else who may have come across this before to provide their help here. My only other suggestion would be to contact VTech directly.
Thanks again for visiting,
Steve
Hi Steve,
ReplyDeleteMy soon-to-be 9 year old is asking for the kidizoom for his birthday. I'm afraid it will be a little "young" for him and he might get bored with the watch quickly. What do you think? I've been looking and can't seem to find a smartwatch geared towards kids 9-12 age range. PS He does not have a cell phone (and won't have one for several years). Thanks!
Hi Jen,
DeleteThis is a bit of a tricky one. Your 9 year-old is definitely at the top end of the age range for the Kidizoom Smartwatch, but you want to get him something that you know will have some mileage.
And I have to agree that it's that age when many parents feel (and some kids too) that more grown up tech like the latest cell phone is not quite the right gift. You're also right in that there isn't much out there in terms of smartwatches for kids that are as fully-featured as the VTech Kidizoom.
But, enough of telling you what you already know. My advice would be that the Kidizoom would be a good gift here - but go for the Kidizoom Smartwatch DX. It's the second generation version which came out only a few months ago. It's a lot slicker looking than the original (a bit more like a regular watch) and it has a couple of extra apps. There are also a few online exclusive editions that you can get through Amazon.
On a final note, as an adult I bought myself one of the first watches which had an inbuilt camera (about 15 years ago). It took black and white pictures, the resolution was low and it cost me quite a bit of money for what it was. Did I get my money's worth? Boy, did I! Just having the camera functionality alone was a big hit at parties, any occasions when I just wanted to record something interesting, and having an interest in technology I thought that thing was just great. I never got bored of it, but after a few years of hard use it broke and that-was-that. If I thought I could get away with wearing the Kidizoom that takes color pictures, video and has lots of apps, I would! The Kidizoom is most definitely a kid's watch, but it has a lot of grown-up ideas to offer.
I hope this helps Jen, and thanks a lot for visiting.
Steve
Steve,
DeleteThanks for your quick reply and great advice. The kidizoom dx is the model I have been researching on Amazon and considering. I think for the price and features he will be happy with it :)
thanks again!
I see you mention the dx model above. Is there a difference between the regular model and dx? Researching for a 5 yr old for Christmas 😊 Do they sell both models in store?
ReplyDeleteHi AdamKatie,
DeleteLast thing first. Yes, you can get both models in store, and they would both be an excellent Christmas gift for a 5 year-old.
The DX version (sometimes called the Kidizoom Smartwatch 2) is the second generation Vtech wearable tech which came out this year. It's got twice the in-built memory as last year's original model and can store approximately 1600 photos from the 640x480 resolution camera, or about 10 minutes of video at 320x240 resolution (although there's a limit of 60 seconds duration per single video).
As well as the increased memory there are also new clock faces, including ones that have a cool 3D effect. There are also new calculator and calendar apps and 8 more games that can be downloaded from the Vtech Learning Lodge.
Personally, I'd go for the DX because of the additional features. Also, unlike some other devices, the user manual is really helpful and clear. It tells you exactly how to use the Kidizoom Smartwatch, how to take care of it, there are lots of frequently asked questions, troubleshooting tips and contact details should you need any further advice.
I hope all this helps, and thanks for visiting.
Steve
Thank you so much that helps more than you know! Now to find the best deal! 😊
ReplyDeleteHi, I was wondering if either of these has a specif function I'm looking for. I would like a device that has multiple alarms, and preferably ones that I can customize the sounds on. The purpose being that my son can be alerted to Lunch time, nap time, bedtime, etc. Any help would be much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteHi there,
DeleteThis is functionality that would be a great addition to either of these devices. Unfortunately, neither the Kidizoom nor the LeapBand have this capability. The Kidizoom (which has an alarm) has ten options for alarm sounds, but only the option to set one alarm time. One of those sound options is the ability to record the sound yourself - so it's nearly there, in terms of what you're looking for, but not quite.
You can get children's watches with alarms that can be set for multiple times throughout the day, and these are mainly geared towards being reminders for things like taking medication at specific times. However, they are just regular watches, not smart watches like the ones shown here. Also, they probably wouldn't have customizable sounds.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but thanks for the interesting question and for visiting this site.
