Lego Base Plates for Table-Top Building and Lego Play Tables

Lego play tables and Lego base plates for table top building are an absolute must for Lego creations. Houses, farms, towns and castles all require a sturdy area to construct on. What's more, on a base plate those creations will then be easier to display and move around in one piece.

Shown in the picture is a Lego table with built-in base plates. There are a number of styles specifically designed with kids and Lego in mind, and I showcase some of these on this page.

Lego 10x10 Base Plates

The Lego green building plate is the ideal size for a kitchen table, coffee table or even the floor. I’ve got into the habit of picking up at least one of these base plates whenever I buy Lego online, because I always know my kids will need them later on.

This same size base plate is also available in blue.

LEGO Extra Large Gray Plate (15″ x 15″)

This is the daddy of ‘em all! A Lego base plate that you may find a little too big for your table. 15″x15″ in gray and with 48×48 studs, it should meet the needs of most large Lego projects.

I find that gray Lego base plates are a good match for Lego sets involving cars (because the plates are road-colored) or space, because a lot of the Lego spaceships are gray and it’s also the color of the Moon. The Lego Seaside House set shown below uses small colored plates to great effect in representing a lawn, the beach and the sea.

The sophistication of Lego house and building sets has come a long way since I was a kid. I absolutely love the idea of this one, and it comes with so many neat touches.

This amazing Lego house-by-the-sea features a two-storey interior, surfer minifigure, seagull, crab, fish and even a wave breaking on the shore!

LEGO Education Large Base Plates (4 Pieces)

A selection of Lego building plates only suitable for those with a lot of Lego. Oh… that’s you? Silly me!

Including two 9.84″-square green, one 9.84″-square blue, and one 14.96″-square gray plates. Forget the table, join these together on the floor for that massive, sprawling creation like the Lego Medieval Market Village shown below.

Spread out on a table this Lego set would look great. However, it does feature a lot of parts, so I'd suggest at least one base plate to capture the scene - frozen in medieval time!

Featuring a cosy tavern, blacksmith's shop, stables, village characters, animals and scenery. This Lego set really does have it all, and when finished it looks simply great.

A more flexible alternative to the square Lego base plate

As you can see from the picture, this is the perfect Lego base plate for table building. In fact, it’s even better than that (if that’s possible), because it’s flexible, sizeable (12″ x 32″) and is double-sided.

One side fits standard Lego bricks and the other side Duplo bricks. You could take it on long car journeys or holidays, and the kids will always have a surface to play on.

Table for Lego

This is the table for Lego shown in the introduction to this site. It’s constructed with easy-to-clean laminated wooden board, and features a table top that’s compatible with standard Lego bricks. Even though it’s not an official Lego product, I think it offers a really nice and favorably-priced alternative to the tables from the Lego Education collection below.

The table measures 20″ x 24″ x 24″ (H x W x D).





LEGO Education Green Hardwood Flip Top Playtable

The Lego Education flip-top play table allows the switch between a standard Lego base plate on one side and Lego Duplo on the other. No tools are needed to flip the table top. It’s constructed of solid hardwood and also features underside rails to accomodate Lego Education XL Storage Bins (these need to be purchased separately).

The table measures 20″ x 27″ x 27″ (H x W x D). Assembly is required.
