The Morning Banana Diet
Lose weight eating bananas - Japanese style
Everyone knows eating fresh fruit contributes to a healthy diet, but can you really shed pounds by following a banana-inspired slimming program? Well, some years ago in Japan, they thought just that.
So good… and so good for you! Image courtesy of Jomphong @ FreeDigitalPhotos.net |
The diet was invented by a pharmacist with the intention of boosting the metabolism of her slightly overweight husband, and it consisted of little more than eating a banana for breakfast washed down with a glass of room-temperature water. Throughout the rest of the day, you could pretty much eat what you liked as long as you skipped desserts after meals and were also in bed before midnight.
How this diet was supposed to actually work was all a bit of a mystery and it was quickly dismissed by Japanese doctors. However, publication of the diet and a number of television shows later, and bananas were being hailed as the new superfood to help weight loss.
Sales of bananas went through the roof and supermarkets struggled to keep their shelves stocked. Naturally, the price of bananas also went up, and those following the diet then found themselves losing pounds in more ways than one.
Nowadays, the Morning Banana Diet still retains some popularity, but as a health craze it seems to have passed. I think it’s probably fair to say that the original intent of the diet and its advice was all about promoting healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle – and that by going a bit bananas, many people missed the point.

Bananas Must Be Straight - It's the Law!
Did the European Union really have rules on straight bananas?

Imagine having to measure all those curves! Image courtesy of markuso @ FreeDigitalPhotos.net |
The whole story hit the headlines about 15 years ago when people in the UK, who were a little skeptical about the influence that the European Parliament had on the British way of life, expressed outrage that European laws could be enforced with regards to the “correct” curvature of fruit and vegetables.
Naturally, this was played down as a “euro-myth”, but a few years later the European Union came clean and admitted that there were indeed such regulations, which they were about to get rid of.
For example, Commission Regulation EC 2257/94 stipulated that bananas should be “free from malformation or abnormal curvature”.
It regulation also identified different classes of bananas, which were allowed to have varying “defects of shape”. No attempt was really made to define what “abnormal curvature” was in terms of measurements, but it was undoubtedly such talk that helped fuel the scandal.
As it turns out, crooked bananas never were actually banned, but I’m not so sure about the fate of the poor cucumber (Commission Regulation EEC 1677/88)…

Bananas in Pyjamas
Good thing it wasn't oranges - 'orange' is one of the few words in the English language that doesn't rhyme with anything...
Bananas in Pyjamas is a song written in 1967 by the British composer Carey Blyton, who was the nephew of the children’s author Enid Blyton.
The song contains a number of characters and somewhat bizarre elements that appeal to children’s imagination. It includes Bananas in Pyjamas coming down the stairs (presumably from the bedroom where they’ve been asleep) and Bananas in Pyjamas chasing Teddy Bears, who they like to catch ‘unawares’.
The song featured on the Australian version of the children’s show Play School, along with an animation of two Bananas in Pyjamas. Later, this was made into its own series of five-minute episodes featuring actors in costume, and an accompanying range of toy Bananas in Pyjamas was launched.
The YouTube video below shows the episode where the bananas, only ever known as B1 and B2, disguise themselves as garden gnomes in an attempt to fool the Teddy Bears.

Ever heard of nanocellulose fibers? No? Well, they’re what you get with some special processing of plant materials, such as bananas and pineapples.

Nanocellulose plastic is 30% lighter and up to 4 times stronger than petroleum based plastics – in other words, about the same strength as Kevlar. It’s also more resistant to heat, gasoline and water, and is biodegradable.
Obvious applications being put forward for this amazing material are in the automotive industry, where a major reduction in the weight of new vehicles could be achieved. Nanocellulose plastics would be ideal in the production of dashboards, bumpers and body panels.
At the moment, nanocellulose plastics can only be made in small quantities and it’s expensive stuff. But in the future, who knows? One day, we might all be driving banana cars.
